The Story

A 90-year-old Nair tharavadu in the Palakkad countryside, abandoned for two decades, brought back to life for an NRI family reconnecting their children with their Kerala roots. The brief was clear: restore soul, add comfort, but let nothing modern show its face.

Conservation Philosophy

Every salvageable element was kept — the rosewood pillars with their hand-carved capitals, the carved padippura gateway that still frames the morning sun, the nalukettu courtyard layout with its central tulsi thara. Original stone paving was lifted, cleaned, and relaid over hidden rainwater harvesting channels.

Modern Interventions

Concealed air conditioning routed through original rafters, underfloor wiring, and a full smart-home system controllable from Dubai. All modern elements are invisible — you see heritage, you feel comfort. The kitchen conceals an induction hob behind a traditional wooden rail; a second range uses clay pots over a reformed wood-fire area for special occasions.

The Courtyard

The central courtyard was our most careful work. We introduced a shallow water channel — traditionally called a nalil — framed in restored laterite, with a brass spout shaped like a makara. In the evenings, light from the surrounding rooms spills onto the water and makes the entire house glow amber.
